Notes:
1. This spreadsheet, "Northern New Jersey Housing Data by County and Municipality, 1990-2000," provides data from the decennial U.S. censuses for 1990 and 2000 for the eight counties of Northern New Jersey and each of their municipalities, plus totals for the eight-county region and for the state of New Jersey.

2. The data are presented in Microsoft Excel format (vers 2000)

3. Housing data (i.e. numbers of housing units) are presented for each of the two decennial censuses. Number of units for 1990 and 2000 are presented, as well as the number and percent change in units from 1990 to 2000. These data indicate total housing units, including occupied and vacant, seasonal and year-round. Group quarters (e.g. institutional facilities such as prisons, college dormitories, etc.) are not included. *

4. Data are arrayed in the following sequence: 1. Urban counties first (Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, and Union), 2. Suburban/rural counties second (Morris, Sussex, and Warren).

5. Data source: The source for the 1990 data is, "The New Jersey Municipal Data Book, Edition: 2000," Publisher : Information Publications. The sourcees for the 2000 data are: http://quickfacts.census.gov/hunits/states/34pl.html http://quickfacts.census.gov/hunits/states/34cty.html

* The definition of a housing unit according to the U.S. Census Bureau is the following: A housing unit is a house, an apartment, a mobile home or trailer, a group of rooms or a single room occupied as separate living quarters or, if vacant, intended as separate living quarters. Separate living quarters are those in which the occupants live and eat separately from any other persons in the building and have direct access from outside the building or through a common hall. The occupants may be a single family, one person living alone, two or more families living together, or any other group of persons who share living arrangements. For vacant units, the criteria of separateness and direct access are applied to the intended occupants. If that information cannot be obtained, the criteria are applied to the previous occupants. Both occupied and vacant housing units are included in the housing unit inventory, except that recreational vehicles, boats, vans, tents, railroad cars, and the like are included only if they are occupied as someone's usual place of residence. Vacant mobile homes are included if they are intended for occupancy on the site where they stand. Vacant mobile homes on the dealers' sales lot, at the factory, or in storage yards are excluded.

6. While the Cornwall Center makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of the data posted herein, we cannot guarantee that there are no errors. Inaccuracies are possible, though unlikely, if the original providers of the data (e.g. Census Bureau or other reliable entities) have posted incorrect statistics or if errors were made in transmission to our database.
