Since Europeans first settled in the New Jersey area in the early 1600s, immigrants have defined the state’s population, culture, and economy. Currently, a wave of immigration brings over a million foreign-born people to the United States every year, tens of thousands of which make their home in New Jersey.Over the next few weeks, our look into immigration in New Jersey will observe the overall number and proprtion of foreign-born residents, the timeframe in which they entered the United States, and the world region of their birth. We will finish with a look at the prevelence of different languages in New Jersey neighborhoods.
